DVD Sales - Transformers Change the Home Market
October 29, 2007
There were six new releases on this week's sales chart, including the number one film of the week, The Transformers. That DVD sold 5.09 million units for opening week sales of $117.01 million, which was the best opening on the home market this year in terms of raw dollars. However, 300 sold more units, barely, at 5.10 million.
Grindhouse - Planet Terror started out in second place with $9.74 million in sales from 424,000 units sold, which is moderately better than Death Proof did during its opening week. The Reaping completed the hat trick of new releases as it sold 260,000 for first week sales of $5.19 million. The only holdovers in the top five were Evan Almighty and Surf's Up which sold 253,000 and 243,000 units respectively. Both films should sell the 1 millionth unit sometime this week.
Other new releases to chart this week include The Invisible in ninth place with 118,000 units sold for $2.36 million in sales. This is a disappointing start, but everything about this film's run so far as been disappointing. Next up is the direct-to-DVD sequel, Return to House on Haunted Hill and its 13th place opening with 81,000 units sold for $1.64 million in sales. Finally, A Mighty Heart sold 40,000 units landing in 25th place.
There was a bevy of milestones this week as well with The Jungle Book, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Bridge to Terabithia all reaching 2 million in sales this week while Heroes reached 1 million.
