International Top Five - Bourne Refuses to Fall
October 3, 2007
The summer blockbuster season may have ended a month ago, but The Bourne Ultimatum is still ruling the international box office. This week the film added $9.61 million on 2875 screens in 47 markets for a total of $162.78 million so far. The film had no major, or even midlevel openings this past weekend, but it still managed an estimated $1.5 million in France for a total of $12.6 million after three weeks there. Even if the film had no more markets left to debut in, it could still cross $200 million internationally, and with openings in Italy and Japan still ahead, the goal is to earn more than the first two installments in the franchise combined.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry climbed into second place, in fact, early estimates had the film winning the weekend race. The film had a busy weekend opening in several markets including Germany and Mexico winning both while taking in $2.86 million on 497 screens in the former and $1.25 million on 305 screens in the later. The film even held up well in the U.K. as it remained in third place down just 24% adding $1.68 million on 406 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.01 million after two. Overall the film added $8.77 million on 2333 screens in 35 markets for a total of $37.57 million after two months of release.
Moving in the other direction, Resident Evil: Extinction slipped from second to third with $7.58 million on 1618 screens in 10 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $19.19 million. The film opened in second place in Germany with $1.31 million on 250 screens. However, it was holdovers that gave the film its best box office numbers of the weekend as it added $1.71 million on 480 screens in Russia for a two-week total of $7.37 million while in Mexico it added $1.19 million on 350 screens for a total of $4.32 million, also after two.
Ratatouille returned to the top five with $6.59 million on 2764 screens in 34 markets for a total of $224.48 million internationally. The film opened in first place in Norway with $687,000 on 102 screens over the weekend and $881,000 in total while it grew by 13% in Australia adding $1.09 million on 360 screens for a total of $8.69 million. Meanwhile in France, the film cracked $60 million and now sits at $60.23 million, including $1.33 million on 592 screens this past weekend. With a trio of major markets left to open in, $500 million worldwide isn't out of the question, which is more than enough to show a profit before it hits the home market.
Brave One made its first appearance on the charts in fifth place with $6.42 million on 2048 screens in 19 markets for an early international total of $8.09 million. However, this is not nearly as impressive as it seems as the film debuted in most major European markets over the weekend. The film opened in second place in Spain with $1.29 million on 303 screens, but that was the only market it performed well in. In France it took in $1.25 million on 277 screens, but that was for the full week while in Germany it earned $1.14 million on 401 taking fifth place in both markets. The U.K. only earned the film $1.01 million on 377 screens for seventh place while it managed fourth in Italy with $872,000 on 251 screens. There's almost nowhere for the film to go after this, so its prospects are weak, very weak.
