International Top Five - A Change at the Top

July 11, 2007

The Transformers climbed into top spot with $47.17 million on 3381 screens in 29 markets for a total of $97.21 million. The film opened in nearly 20 markets, and did extremely well in a number of them, but it was a holdover that led the way. In South Korea the film grew by 5% to $11.83 million on 617 screens for a two-week total of $31.02 million, which is nearly what Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End will earn there in total. Its biggest opening came in Russia where it made $6.81 million on 700 screens over the weekend and $7.19 million in total while in Spain it took in $3.57 million on 565 screens over the weekend and $4.87 million in total. These two totals are probably better indicators of the film's international drawing power, but it should still do very well overseas.

Live Free or Die Hard again failed to top The Transformers, but it was even closer this weekend earning $43.39 million on 6903 screens in 49 markets for a total of $86.17 million, which puts it ahead of its domestic pace. The film's biggest opening came in the U.K. where it managed $10.08 million on 458 screens, which was the tiniest margin behind the second weekend of Shrek the Third. It was able to top the chart is France with $6.95 million on 749 screens while pulling in $1.08 million on 98 screens in neighboring Belgium, (including previews). Holdovers were not as strong with the film down 48% in Germany to $4.03 million on 727 screen over the weekend and $14.08 million in total while it was down a staggering 49% in Japan to $3.24 million on 729 screens and a total of $14.54 million. While the decline in Japan was only 1% more, that is a lot compared to the historical averages for the market.

Shrek the Third fell from first to third with $35.69 million on 5912 screens in 42 markets for a total of $325.53 million. The film fell a eye-popping 70% during its second weekend in the U.K., but that's only if you include previews during its first weekend. Removing those numbers and the film still fell more than 50% to $10.25 million on 538 screens, but with a total of $51.77 million already the studio should be happy. There were no significant openings this weekend, and there won't be till it opens in China at the end of this month and Italy at the end of the next.

Ocean's Thirteen climbed to fourth place with $9.31 million on 4744 screens in 54 markets for a total of $141.77 million after a month of release. The film is rapidly running out of market left to open in and has little chance to match the previous releases either internationally and especially not worldwide.

Ratatouille climbed into the top five with $9.14 million on 1818 screens in 13 markets for a very early international total of $17.71 million. The film opened well in Mexico scoring first place with $4.61 million on 688 screens over the weekend and $4.92 million in total. This is minor amount above the $4.55 million on 425 screens Cars opened with in the market last year. In addition, the film added $1.87 million on 450 screens during its second weekend in Russia for a total of $6.82 million, which is about 50% more than Cars made in total in that market.
