International Details - 300 Makes a Late Surge

June 17, 2007

300 returned to the international chart this week thanks entirely to its opening in Japan. In that market, the film opened in second place with $2.71 million on 452 screens over the weekend and $3.39 million including last week's premiere in Tokyo. This was enough for it to capture sixth place internationally with $2.75 million on 576 screens in 8 markets, while lifting its total to $236.89 million.

  • Despite small growth over the weekend, Fracture dipped one place to seventh with $2.44 million on 1180 screens in 17 markets for a total of $28.04 million. So far the film hasn't taken off as well as many analysts had predicted, and there's not that many more markets remaining for the film to turn things around.
  • Hwang Jin-yi opened in its native market of South Korea with $2.39 million on 489 screens over the weekend and $4.81 million in total. This was strong enough for second place in the market and eighth place internationally.
  • Conversations with My Gardener opened in second place in France, and ninth place internationally, with $2.22 million on 513 screens in its native market.
  • Death Proof virtually double its screen count this weekend climbing to ninth place with $2.20 million on 833 screens in 9 markets for a very early international total of $4.46 million. The film's best opening was France where it earned third place with $1.49 million on 347 screens while it was down 68% in Italy with $371,000 on 318 screens for a $2.05 million total. It is important to note that the film had the second best week-to-week drop-off in the top ten there as the summer season is starting and many theaters are closing down for the next few months.
  • Surf's Up started its international run this past weekend, but unlike its performance domestically, it was strong in the two markets it opened in. It took second place in both Russia and the Ukraine with $1.82 million on 339 screens and $172,000 on 60 screens respectively. These numbers are not huge, but will put $100 million within the realm of possibility, unlike its domestic run.
  • Dai-Nipponjin slipped a spot to third in its native Japan with $1.33 million on 221 screens for a two-week total of $5.06 million.
  • 28 Weeks Later tumbled from 7th place to 13th with $1.22 million on 1419 screens in 15 markets for a total of $18.98 million. The film opens in Spain later this month, Germany next month, and France and Italy in September, so it does have opportunities to recover, but it will have to start soon.
  • Secret Sunshine landed in fourth place in South Korea and 14th internationally after earning $1.02 million on 279 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.15 million in total.
  • Happily N'Ever After returned to the charts with $1.01 million on 483 screens in 8 markets for a total of $13.12 million, which puts it about two weeks from overtaking its dismal domestic run. The film opened in third place in Spain scoring $767,000 on 265 screens over the weekend, which is certainly not praiseworthy numbers, but no worse than most of the rest of its run.
  • The Prestige opened in fifth place in Japan with $919,000 on 255 screens, which was its entire international haul over the weekend. Given the film's sub-$5000 per screen average, it won't last there long, but at least its international total of $53.46 million is ahead of its domestic one.
  • Hostel: Part II opened internationally over the weekend, but bombed worse than it did domestically. In Australia, which was its biggest market, it earned a mere $395,000 on 98 screens while its total in 8 markets was $586,000 on 176 screens.
We also have updates for a few late runners...
