International Top Five - High School an International Affair

High School Musical 3: Senior Year opened in first place on the international chart with an impressive $40.68 million on 3,165 screens in 19 markets. This includes first place openings in a number of markets, including the U.K. where it pulled in $9.13 million on 493 screens over the weekend for $12.92 million in total. Other first place openings include Germany with $5.69 million on 529 screens and in Spain, where it pulled in a hair under $5.00 million on 402 screens. The film also did well in France to place second with $4.3 million, while it also pulled in more than $1 million in Brazil ($1.7 million) and Poland ($1 million). Next up for the film is Italy this weekend, while it doesn't end its run until Japan in February, so it could be in the charts for a long time.

Max Payne climbed into second place with $9.05 million on 2,355 screens in 44 markets for a total of $17.71 million. The film opened in first place in Russia with $3.52 million on 504 screens, which was just a hair ahead of the Admiral (Kolchak). It also opened in Mexico, but struggled with just $460,000 on 316 screens, which was still enough for second place. In Spain the film fell to $725,000 on 302 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.01 million.

Burn After Reading slipped a spot to third with $8.32 million on 2,033 screens in 25 markets for a total of $48.63 million. This week's box office earnings includes a first place, $903,000 weekend on 216 screens in Australia over the weekend for a total of $2.51 million. On the other hand, the film placed third in both the U.K. with $2.20 million on 395 screens and in Spain with $1.08 million on 316 screens. The film has made $7.05 million and $6.12 million in those two markets respectively.

Eagle Eye fell from first to fourth place with $6.78 million on 2,927 screens on 51 markets for a total of $57.34 million after a month of release. Its best market of the weekend was Japan where it added $1.72 million on 310 screens for a total of $6.75 million. It also topped $1 million in South Korea with $1.24 million on 348 screens for $7.86 million, while the U.K. helped bring in $1.07 million on 362 screens for a total of $3.60 million.

Saw V opened in fifth place with $6.76 million on 930 screens in 9 markets for a total of $6.79 million including a few early shows. Its biggest market was the U.K. where it made $3.74 million on 367 screens, enough for second place. It also placed second in Australia, but with only $827,000 on 200 screens.
