Per Theater Chart goes a Little Wacky

July 8, 2008

The Wackness opened in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $23,067. But I'm going to wait to see how well it expands before judging its chances of becoming this year's sleeper hit. After all, so many limited releases have failed to make it there this year. Second place went to fellow limited release, Tell No One, which opened with an estimated average of $21,250 in 8 theaters. The overall box office leader, Hancock, was the only other new release to top $10,000 on the per theater chart -- it earned an average of $15,789.

There were only a few other limited releases this week, but a couple of them did very well. This includes Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson and Kabluey as the two films opened with $7,678 and $7,373 respectively. Meanwhile Holding Trevor struggled a bit with $3,915 while Diminished Capacity only managed an average of $2,958.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Mongol dipped a bit from last weeks high, but it still reached $3 million over the weekend and should hit $4 million by this time next week.
  • Kit Kittredge: An American Girl also hit a milestone when its box office total topped $5 million over the weekend. However, this is not good news, as the film expanded wide over the weekend. I usually take films off this list when they reach 2,000 theaters and / or the top five on the overall charts. This film was not able to do either.
