DVD Sales - Treasure Richer on the Sales Chart
June 1, 2008
The last of 2008's monster hits finally hit the home market last week, and it made quite an impact. National Treasure: Book of Secrets opened in first place on the sales chart and had the second best opening for the year with 3.49 million units sold and opening week sales of $55.77 million.
Indiana Jones - The Adventure Continues was pushed into second place but still sold 280,000 units for $11.09 million in revenue for the week and $31.24 million in total. Meanwhile, Raiders of the Lost Ark climbed into third place with 233,000 units sold for the week and 475,000 units in total, which adds up to $8.10 million in revenue. National Treasure returned to the charts in fourth place with 198,000 units sold and $3.26 million in sales. Finally, The Last Crusade and The Temple of Doom battled for fifth place, finishing with 186,000 units and 176,000 units respectively. Altogether, the Indiana Jones franchise sold 876,000 units for the week and earned $21.31 million.
Outside of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the best new release was Diary of the Dead with 87,000 units for opening week sales of $1.57 million, which is very strong for a limited release. On the other hand, Strange Wilderness opened with 73,000 units and $1.47 million, which is bad, but not that bad compared to its short theatrical run. Finally, WWE: Wrestlemania 24 opened in 17th place with 66,000 for a total of $1.24 million.
Moving onto Blu-ray, sales were up for the week by nearly 55% and it climbed to 7% in the 20 / 20 comparison. I doubt it will stay there for long as the strength of Blu-ray releases wanes the next week, but it shows that when a top tier title comes along, Blu-ray can generate serious revenue.
