Iron Man the Wise Choice to Top Per Theater Chart

Not only did Iron Man remain on top of the weekend box office chart, it also topped the per theater chart with an average of $12,452. The only other film to top $10,000 was Surfwise, which did it with $10,304 in one theater.

The Fall was the best of the rest of the limited releases earning an average of $8,846, which suggests some ability to expand. Bloodlines did better than expected with $6,200, also in one theater, while Before the Rains was right behind with an average of $6,020 in eight. None of the rest of the new releases were able to perform well with OSS 117 earning an average of $3,491 in 9 theaters, while The Tracey Fragments earned an average of just over $3,000 ($3,002) and Turn the River earned just under $3,000 ($2,900). Likewise, Battle for Haditha earned just over the Mendoza Line at $2,181 while Noise opened just below it at $1,844. The Babysitters opened in way too many theaters and earned an average of just $1,069. However, at that level it is hard to image it would have done well even in just one theater. Finally, both The Frontière(s) and House of Usher failed to reach four digits with averages of $990 and $891 respectively.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Redbelt expanded into more than 1,000 theaters, but it only made $1 million over the weekend and it is unlikely to earn $2 million in total.
  • Young @ Heart crossed $1 million since last week and it should earn $2 million, perhaps by as soon as this time next week.
  • The Visitor topped $2 million, as expected, and it is storming toward $3 million.
  • Shine a Light reached $5 million, but that's as far as it will go.
