DVD Sales - Alvin is a Killer Release
April 14, 2008
Only three new releases charted this week, but this includes the two top-selling DVDs. Leading the way was Alvin and the Chipmunks with an impressive 3.15 million units for opening week sales of $51.96 million. The movie is already in the top five for 2008.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Baker Street had a more subdued opening but still did relatively well with 867,000 units and opening week sales of $17.45 million. The biggest selling DVD of the year, I Am Legend, fell to third place with 401,000 units for the week giving it a three-week total of 4.76 million units and $89.22 million. A pair of kids movies came next with Enchanted leading Bee Movie 245,000 units to 161,000. Additionally, Enchanted has overtaken Bee Movie in total units sold (3.56 million to 3.54 million) but not sales revenue ($55.92 million vs. $57.35 million).
The only other new release to chart was Martin - Season Four with 39,000 units sold for $781,000.
It was a slow week for Blu-ray sales with the format only taking only 64% of the High Definition market and dropping to 4% in the Top 20 DVD vs. Top 20 Blu-ray comparison. However, the number one release was aimed at kids, which is not the type of release that interests most early adapters so this was to be expected. However, the Blu-ray market is rather light from now until May when National Treasure comes out. I do expect some growth in the meantime, but nothing spectacular.
