DVD Sales - Shopping Season is Officially Over
January 14, 2008
Not a single DVD sold a million units or more this week, but there were three new releases to reach the top five on this week's sales chart.
This includes Resident Evil: Extinction, which sold 856,000 units to place first with opening week revenue of $16.03 million.
War opened in sixth place with 520,000 units sold for revenue of $10.36 million.
Rush Hour 3 and The Kingdom were neck and neck with the former selling 290,000 units and the latter selling 272,000 units.
Both films were able to top 1 million units in total sales.
Shoot 'Em Up was the final new release to chart with 267,000 units, for sales of $5.07 million.
No other new releases charted this week, but Superbad and Knocked Up both reached $100 million in total sales.
This week, Blu-Ray's advantage grew to 65% to 35%.
This is not surprising given the top three new releases on DVD were all Blu-Ray exclusive.
Warner Bros.' announcement to go Blu-Ray exclusive was too late in the week to have a substantial effect, but that won't be true next week.
