International Top Five - Up Soars Higher
October 21, 2009
Up had its best weekend on the international stage thanks mainly to two factors: It's first place opening in Italy, and its first place hold in the U.K. In Italy the film opened with $6.67 million on 652 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.15 million, which is a little weaker than Ice Age but better than Transformers. It held on very well well in the U.K. down just 19% to $8.40 million on 746 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.62 million after just two weeks of release. Ny this time next week it could have more than Cars made in total in that market, while it should end its run somewhere between WALL-E ($41 million) and Ratatouille ($48 million). Overall the film added $29.77 million on 4602 screens in 26 markets for a total of $295.15 million internationally and $587.96 million worldwide and has very likely that the film has reached $300 million internationally.
G-Force climbed into second place with $12.65 million on 2889 screens in 36 markets for a total of $127.46 million internationally, which is ahead of its domestic total by close to $10 million. The film opened in first place in Germany with $4.10 million on 521 screens while it wasn't quite as potent in France with $2.5 million on 316. It grew by 8% in Spain with $2.33 million on 482 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.80 million after two.
The Ugly Truth was relatively flat adding $8.64 million on 2332 screens in 58 markets for a total of $93.85 million. At this pace, the film will reach $100 million internationally by the end of the upcoming weekend, and $200 million worldwide by the end of the month. Its biggest opening of the weekend was Spain where it placed second with $2.77 million on 359 screens, while it added $1.84 million on 507 screens over the weekend in Germany for a total of $11.59 million after three weeks of release in that market.
Couples Retreat entered the top five for the first time with $6.76 million on 938 screens in 5 markets over the weekend for a total of $10.75 million after two. The film opened in second place in the U.K. with $2.19 million on 380 screens while it earned first place in Russia but with just $1.63 million on 297. It actually made more during its second weekend of release in Australia adding $1.79 million on 221 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.54 million.
Inglourious Basterds continues its march toward $300 million worldwide with $6.70 million on 2539 screens in 48 markets for a total of $166.42 million internationally and $285.49 million worldwide. The film has yet to open in South Korea and Japan, but I'm not expecting too much out of those markets. However, even if it makes less than $1 million in those two markets combined, it should still have enough to hit the $300 million mark worldwide, unless something very strange happens in its holdovers.
