International Top Five - Building a Strong Foundation
September 24, 2009
The Founding Of A Republic opened in first place in China and first place internationally with $18.24 million on 1450 screens. It's quite rare for an non-Hollywood movie to top the international charts, but now is a great time of year for that to happen, as the summer blockbusters are (mostly) coasting on holdovers and the fall blockbusters are weeks away.
Up just missed a major milestone with $14.68 million on 3189 screens in 24 markets for a total of $197.27 million internationally, but it has likely already surpassed the $200 million market. Worldwide the film has made $489.09 million and by this time next week will have reached half a billion in total. This week's openings include Germany, where the film had to settle for second place to a local hit. It still managed $5.32 million on 809 screens, which is strong for this time of year, but not overwhelming numbers. It remained in first place in Australia with $2.92 million on 434 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.22 million after three weeks of gradual release. In Spain the film managed fifth place with $584,000, which might not seem noteworthy, but it was enough to lift its total there to $35.23 million, which is the best ever for an animated film in that market.
Inglourious Basterds remained in third place with $11.91 million on 2856 screens in 38 markets over the weekend for a total of $116.46 million after a month of release. The film is now the undisputed biggest box office hit of Quentin Tarantino's career. It was aided by a first place, $4.24 million opening on 482 screens in Spain, which was also the best rest in Quentin Tarantino's career for that market.
The Final Destination fell from first to fourth with $10.66 million on 2722 screens in 33 markets for a total of $71.67 million. This is already more than any other film in the franchise made internationally; in fact, it is almost as much as Final Destination 2 made worldwide. The film had no major openings this past weekend, but it did add $2.61 million on 590 screens over the weekend in Russia. This was enough to remain in first place in that market, while it pushed its total there to $11.09 million after two weeks of release.
The Ugly Truth rose in to the top five with $7.93 million on 2247 screens in 36 markets for a total of $45.02 million internationally. The film opened in second place in Russia, Brazil, and South Korea. In Russia it made $2.15 million on 400 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.12 million, while in Brazil it opened with $1.09 million on 163 screens over the weekend and $1.24 million in total, and finally it managed $835,000 on 218 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a total there of $983,000.
