Big Issues on the Per Theater Chart

September 1, 2009

This proved to be a bumper weekend for movies in limited release. The September Issue was the number one film on the per theater chart, and it won by a huge margin with an average of $36,736 to an average of $12,133 for Big Fan. The Headless Woman was right behind with $11,862 in one theater. Der Baader Meinhof Komplex grew over the weekend to earn $10,564. Brighton Rock returned to the $10,000 club with $10,392 in one theater. And Still Walking was the final film in the $10,000 club, earning an average of $10,149 in two theaters.

Two of the three other new releases did respectable business, starting with Mystery Team, which opened with $7,840 in one theater; however, it earned more than 60% of that on opening day, which suggests is will collapse from now on. We Live In Public took in $7,325, which should be enough to make the studio happy. Finally we get to Open Road, which was the only limited release that we have numbers for that bombed. This film made just $13,000 in 14 theaters for an average of $952.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Adam reached $1 million just before the weekend and then had its best weekend haul. At this pace, reaching $2 million should be no trouble, but I'm unsure where it will go after that.
  • Food, Inc. made it to $4 million since last week, but that's as far as it will go.
  • (500) Days of Summer has made it all the way to $25 million, which is very impressive, and it's not done yet.
