Limited Release Might Get Loud

August 14, 2009

There are only three limited releases on our list this week, and only one of those, It Might Get Loud, has a legitimate chance to expand. Even then it's only a slim chance of earning some measure of mainstream success.

It Might Get Loud - Reviews
A documentary about the electric guitar and its impact on Rock 'n' Roll featuring three musicians: Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge. Timing for this release is both amazing and amazingly bad, as Les Paul, the 'father of the electric guitar' died yesterday at the age of 94. Reviews are excellent and it is opening wider than most limited releases, but I'm not sure it will be able to thrive, as it might be too late in the summer to build the buzz needed to do so. It Might Get Loud opens tonight in seven theaters, mostly in the Los Angeles area, but also in New York City.

Kaminey - No Reviews
The latest Indian release coming out here and in its homeland on the same day. Like most such films, there are no reviews and no crossover appeal. It does have an Official Site, which is better than a lot of these movies. Kaminey opens tonight in 83 theaters, but that's as wide as it will go.

Spread - Reviews
The widest limited release of the week, it is also earning the weakest reviews of the week. Ashton Kutcher stars as a man who isn't a gigolo or a conman, but is just so good in bed that women give him things. ... Yeah. Now he's torn between two women, a powerful lawyer and a simple waitress. Being described as a vanity project by a lot of critics, and it's hard to argue that point. Spread is opening tonight in 91 theaters nationwide, but that's very likely as far as it will go.
