Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of April 24th, 2009

April 25, 2009

Not a bad week for movie sites, and there are no movies on this week's list that have no presence on the internet, although a couple don't have full sites. On the other hand, the best of the best, Obsessed's Official Site, is only good, but not great, and not worthy of the Weekly Website Award.

Il Divo - Official Site
A very strong site for a limited release with plenty of extras, even if they are text-based. There are character bios, which should be a big help to non-Italians trying to get into this political BioPic. There is also a timeline for more background information and some quote from the real Giulio Andreotti, as well as the usual information. The design suits the movie well and it is better than most sites.

Earth - Official Site
A lot more flash than usual for a documentary sites. Then again, this is not the usual documentary. In addition to the regular features, there are a few clips, a making of featurette, and even a game.

Empty Nest - No Official Site
No Official Site, at least there isn't one for the North American release. You can check out the original here, on the other hand.

Fighting - Official Site
Wow. This site is slow. It does have to load clips as intros for each section, but it is still slow loading. And forget about surfing the site in full screen mode, it's not worth it. The only real extras are five film clips. It's not bad, but it's nothing special either.

The Garden - Official Site
Just the basics, but the trailer is effective and should be enough to sell the movie to potential audiences.

The Informers - Official Site
All the usual infromation is here, as are extras in the form of seven clips. And the site has some great background music (I like Flock of Seagulls. Don't hold it against me.) And even if you don't like the music, you have to appreciate the fact that they have full songs and not merely clips.

The Mutant Chronicles - Official Site
All the usual features are here, and there are also five webisodes, which are very well done and would not be out of place on the DVD. There's more sound and animation on the site than most limited releases have, but not enough to truly stand out. Solidly effective.

Obsessed - Official Site
All the usual features are here (synopsis, production notes, cast & crew bios, images, and trailer) as well as a substantial number of extras. These extras include clips used as intros to each section and a behind-the-scenes featurette that would not be out of place on the DVD. There is also a faux chat with Lisa, but the script is a little short and repeats too frequently to reach its potential. There is a personality quiz to determine if you have a crush or if you are a stalker, and finally a joke you can play on one of your friends. It is arguably the best site on this week's list. It is also arguably not strong enough to be award-worthy.

Only - Official Site
Not a whole lot of content here, and it's mostly just links to other sites. It's a Canadian movie, so I'm not surprised.

The Soloist - Official Site
All the usual features are here, but the heart of the site are the clips. The clips from the movie are still marked coming soon, but there are a behind-the-scenes featurette and even interviews with the real life Nathaniel Ayers and Steve Lopez. Finally, there's a section where you can type what music means to you, while reading how others answered the same question.

Treeless Mountain - No Official Site
No real official site, but the distributor has some information.

Tyson - Official Site
All the usual information for a documentary site, and there's more animation that most such sites. But it's not enough to really stand out.
