International Details - Shopaholic Selling Well

March 22, 2009

The top five on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic nearly doubled its weekend haul as it pulled in $6.78 million on 2023 screens in 26 markets for a total of $31.91 million after a month of release. The film opened in first place in Australia, no surprise there, as that's the home of Isla Fisher, with $1.89 million on 309 screens. It earned a nearly identical result of $1.84 million on 426 screens in Germany, but that was only enough for third place in that market. Next up for the film is South Korea and Spain at the end of this month, while it doesn't end its run till the end of May when it opens in Japan and France.

  • The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button fell out of the top five but with $4.05 million on 2927 screens in 51 markets, its total hit $195.51 million. It may have already reached $200 million internationally.
  • The Reader added $3.97 million on 1215 screens in 19 markets for a total of $34.40 million after a month of release. Its best market continued to be Germany, where it rose to first place with $2.17 million on 490 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.99 million after three weeks of release.
  • The Unborn shot up into the top ten with $3.96 million on 1423 screens in 28 markets for a total of $19.54 million. The film opened in first place in Mexico with $1.37 million on 352 screens, but it struggled in Germany with $744,000 on 250 screens, which was only enough for 8th place.
  • La Matassa opened in first place in Italy and tenth place internationally with $3.84 million on 514 screens.
  • Yatterman: The Movie remained in first place in Japan with $3.67 million on 312 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.80 million.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo opened in first place in Norway with $1.24 million on 94 screens, while it remained in in first place in both Denmark ($1.30 million on 109) and Sweden ($1.10 on 148). In the two latter markets the film has made $8.83 million and $6.80 million respectively. Overall the film placed 12th with $3.66 million on 351 screens in 3 markets for a total of $16.78 million.
  • Pink Panther 2 opened in Germany with $907,000 on 373 screens, which was enough for fifth place. Overall it managed 13th place with $2.78 million on 2423 screens in 56 markets.
  • Doraemon: The Movie remained in second place in Japan and slipped to 14th internationally with $2.66 million on 349 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.10 million after two.
  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opened in second place in Spain with $1.59 million on 297 screens, which helped it climb into 15th place internationally with $2.64 million on 2082 screens in 19 markets for a total of $35.61 million.
  • No Love In The City remained in first place in Russia with $2.15 million on 673 screens over the weekend and $8.52 million in total. Overall it finished in 16th place with $2.62 million on 754 screens in 2 markets for a total of $10.44 million.
  • Gunesi Gordum opened in first place in Turkey and 17th place internationally with $2.52 million on 355 screens. Turkey has been producing a number of home-grown hits recently, and I think this is good news for the worldwide box office.
  • Hotel For Dogs climbed one spot to 18th while its box office dipped just 4% to $2.49 million on 1997 screens in 38 markets for a total of $34.95 million. Its only major market opening this past weekend was in Spain where it made $523,000 on 220 screens. It won't match its domestic total internationally, but films aimed at such a young target demographic rarely do.
  • Bolt fell from 7th to 19th with $2.34 million on 2494 screens in 27 markets for a total of $175.60 million. The film is shedding screens and markets at the moment, but after it opens in Japan at the beginning of August, it should reach $300 million worldwide, and maybe even $200 million internationally.
  • Gulaal opened with $2.16 million on 632 screens in 9 markets, which is on par with most Indian films recently. However, that market has been struggling for a while.
  • Bedtime Stories fell out of the top 20 with $2.10 million on 1122 screens in 20 markets for a total of $98.88 million. Its biggest market of the weekend remained Spain where it added $1.24 million on 400 screens for a total of $3.57 million after two. The film opened in Japan on Friday, but we won't have those numbers for a few days. Once we do, there's little doubt the film will have reached $100 million internationally. And by the time it opens in Italy next weekend, it should be Adam Sandler's biggest international hit of his career.
  • Welcome opened in second place in France and 22nd internationally with $2.01 million on 209 screens.
  • Departures earned $2.01 million on 238 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total of $55.48 million. This includes $1.76 million on 197 screens over the weekend in Japan for a total of $53.16 million half a year after its release.
  • The International remained in 24th place with $1.97 million on 1231 screens in 36 markets for a total of just $17.39 million. The film opened in France this past weekend with $841,000 on 326 screens, which was only enough for 8th place.
  • He's Just Not That Into You plummeted to 25th place with $1.82 million on 1273 screens in 31 markets for a total of $49.07 million. The film still has a few major markets left to open in, but it won't match its domestic total.
  • Jai Veeru opened in 26th place with $1.78 million on 572 screens in 7 markets, which is also on par with most Indian films in the industry wide slump they are mired with.
  • Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa opened in Japan, but if struggled with just $1.66 million on 456 screens giving it a per screen average well under $5000. It will likely disappear very quickly there. However, with the $1.76 million on 623 screens in 16 markets the film made over the weekend, it now has $404.31 million in total. There's no way the studio isn't happy with that.
  • Friday the 13th returned to the chart in 28th place with $1.68 million on 499 screens in 30 markets for a total of $21.72 million. The film was aided by an opening in South Korea, but it only placed sixth there with $627,000 on 175 screens over the weekend and $682,000 in total.
  • Milk added $1.65 million on 671 screens in 23 markets for a total of $17.87 million.
  • LOL added $1.54 million on 549 screens in 2 markets for a total of $29.96 million.
Also of note, Race to Witch Mountain started its international run this past weekend, but it missed the top 30 with $1.13 million on 185 screens in 5 markets. These were mostly smaller markets, but it did earn second place in the Philippines with $320,000 on 60 screens and in Singapore with $289,000 on 28. This bodes well when it makes its first major market debut next weekend.
