International Top Five - Valkyrie Continues to Conquer Overseas

February 5, 2009

Valkyrie remained in first place with $19.37 million on 4,298 screens in 25 markets for a total of $38.88 million internationally. The film opened in first place in Spain with $3.25 million on 397 screens and in Russia with $2.02 million on 520 screens. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Italy ($2.31 million on 394 screens) and in France ($2.17 million on 450). As for holdovers, the film fell from first to third in Germany, but still added $2.44 million on 695 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.39 million after two.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button shot up into second place with $12.01 million on 2,144 screens in 23 markets for a total of $38.32 million. Almost all of its gains, and nearly half of its weekend haul, came from Germany, where it opened in first place with $5.37 million on 605 screens. The film has openings in the U.K., France, Russia, Japan, and Spain this weekend, which could put it in first place.

Revolutionary Road also showed growth, climbing from seventh place to third with $10.91 million on 2,888 screens in 40 markets for a total of $26.04 million. The film's best market was Italy where it opened in third place with $1.75 million on 281 screens, while it also placed third in the U.K. opening with $1.30 million on 252 screens. On the other hand, it struggled in both Mexico ($220,000 on 125 screens) and in a lesser extent in Russia ($493,000 on 209).

Yes Man slipped a spot to fourth with $9.61 million on 3,217 screens in 54 markets for a total of $99.04 million, which means it is very, very likely that it reached $100 million on Monday. The film opened in first place in Mexico with $1.35 million on 500 screens, while it had to settle for second in Brazil with $855,000 on 151 screens.

Seven Pounds fell to fifth place with $8.03 million on 2,913 screens in 32 markets for a total of $71.68 million internationally, which is more than it made domestically. There were no major openings this week, but that changes this coming weekend, when the film opens in South Korea.
