DVD Sales: Tinker Bell is Great on the DVD Sales Chart
October 5, 2010
It was another week where new releases dominated the DVD sales chart with ten of them placing in the top 30. This includes Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, which took top spot with 920,000 units sold, while its opening week sales of $16.80 million were actually second best. This is a drop from The Lost Treasure; however, it did much, much better on Blu-ray than either of the previous releases.
Robin Hood led the way in terms of dollars with $18.54 million from 806,000 units sold. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was pushed into third place with 234,000 units for the week and 898,000 after two, lifting its sales to $20.22 million. Letters to Juliet fell to fourth with 151,000 units / $2.56 million for the week and 637,000 units / $10.82 million after two. Rounding out the top five was Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Season One, which sold 137,000 units. However, thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, it generated $4.10 million in opening week sales.
How I Met Your Mother: Season Five just missed the top five with 130,000 units / $3.25 million, while the Pick of the Week, Modern Family: Season One, opened in eighth place with 111,000 units / $3.67 million. Further down the list we find Castle: Season Two in eleventh place with 86,000 units / $2.77 million and Two and a Half Men: Season Seven in twelfth place with $75,000 units / $2.32 million. Another TV on DVD release, Desperate Housewives: Season Six, opened in 18th place with 59,000 units / $1.77 million.
We aren't quite done yet with Stomp the Yard: Homecoming debuting in 22nd with place 48,000 units / $910,000. The final new release to chart was 30 Rock: Season Four in 24th place with 47,000 units / $1.56 million.
Blu-ray sales showed real strength up 22% from last week to $23.0 million, which was up 68% from last year. Compared to DVD sales, Blu-ray represented 13% of the total market and 22% of the top 20 comparison. This was the best total sales since Book of Eli came out and the best market share since Kick-Ass / Diary of a Wimpy Kid's opening week.
The best selling Blu-ray of the week was Robin Hood, which sold nearly 600,000 units, or just over 42% of total units. More impressively, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue sold an amazing 325,000 units. A direct-to-DVD kids movie sold 325,000 units. If anyone tells you Blu-ray isn't a mainstream format, they are either not paying attention and / or have an axe to grind.
