3-Day Weekend Estimates: Shrek Triumphs Over Carrie and Friends
May 30, 2010
A weaker-than-expected debut by Sex and the City 2 will leave Shrek Forever After the comfortable winner over Memorial Day Weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
Shrek's 3-day projected gross is $43.345 million, which takes it to $133.1 million after ten days.
That's not, in itself, a spectacular result, since it's a decline of 39% from a soft-ish opening weekend on one of the biggest box office weekends of the year, but it puts the ogre movie over $10 million ahead of Sex over three days -- a lead that will get bigger once Monday's numbers are in.
The daily grosses tell the story for Sex and the City 2.
The movie opened with $14.2 million on Thursday, and has declined every day since.
Friday's $13 million was followed by $10.1 million on Saturday, and Warner Bros. is projecting $9.1 million on Sunday.
The movie's $46.3 million four-day total compares unfavorably with the $56.8 million debut enjoyed by the first movie in the franchise, which itself had poor legs after an impressive debut.
A total of less than $100 million looks likely.
Also disappointing so far is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which opened with $30.2 million for Disney.
The movie never gained much buzz, but an opening $6 million less than Robin Hood on a much bigger weekend is a big disappointment.
None of the returning movies really stood out this weekend.
The best performer in the top ten was Letters to Juliet, which was down 34%.
The movie is now comfortably Summit's best performing movie of 2010.
The strongest debut in limited release was enjoyed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs, which is projected to pick up $49,000 in just 4 theaters.
