Weekend Estimates: Shutter Island Wins Again

A decent 46% second weekend drop was good enough to keep Shutter Island at the top of the box office chart this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With $22.2 million, the movie beat out good debuts by Cop Out and The Crazies, which picked up $18.6 million and $16.5 million respectively. Overall business for the weekend looks as though it will be up about 20% compared to this weekend last year.

In fourth place, and down just 14% in its twelfth weekend in release, Avatar became the first movie ever to earn $700 million at the domestic box office. It hit that mark on Saturday and is projected to end the weekend with $706.9 million in the bank.

Further down the chart, Oscar hopefuls performed impressively for Sony Classics. The Last Station will just top $1 million over the weekend, according to their projection, from 352 theaters. A Prophet, meanwhile, earned an impressive $170,000 in just nine theaters in its first weekend in release.

Also performing well in limited release was Summit's The Ghost Writer, which expanded to 43 theaters and brought in a projected $870,000 at the box office.
