DVD Sales: New Releases Do Bad
February 11, 2010
While there were several new releases on the sales chart, including a new number one, sales were soft as a whole.
The new number one film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, only sold 581,000 units and generated $11.03 million in opening week sales.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs fell to second place with 327,000 units sold, but it still lifted its totals to 1.43 million units and $25.67 million.
The multi-Oscar-nominated The Hurt Locker opened in third place with 316,000 units / $5.68 million, which is excellent for a limited release.
The Hangover earned $4.21 million over the week from 225,000 units and first month sales of 7.21 million units / $136.57 million in consumer spending.
Rounding out the top five was Halloween 2 with 200,000 units / $3.66 million in opening week sales.
In comparison, the previous film opened with nearly 1 million units sold.
Fame just missed the top five with 177,000 units / $2.83 million in sales, while The Simpsons - Season 20 earned $2.50 million from 86,000 units.
Blu-ray sales were mixed.
Overall the number was $18.9 million, according to estimates by Home Media Magazine, which was down 15.5% from last week and barely half of what it was just two weeks ago.
On the other hand, it is up 79.4% from the same weekend last year.
The best-selling Blu-ray of the week was The Hurt Locker with 170,000 units, ahead of The Hangover 90,000 units.
