DVD Sales: Hunger Games Feasts on DVD
August 29, 2012
Despite being out for only two days, The Hunger Games was the best new release and crushed the competition on the DVD sales chart. It sold 2.18 million units while generated $36.97 million, again, in just two days. Its opening was not quite as strong as Breaking Dawn, Part 1's debut was earlier this year, at least not on DVD, but it performed better on Blu-ray.
Doctor Seuss' The Lorax was pushed into second place with 616,000 units / $12.30 million over the week for totals of 2.49 million units / $44.06 million. By this time next week, it could be in second place for the year, although The Hunger Games games might get there first. Dexter: Season Six opened in third place with 287,000 units / $7.16 million. This is a little bit better than the previous season. Glee: Season Three was next with 125,000 units / $3.40 million. It is impossible to directly compare this release to the previous seasons, as they were split into two volumes, but it is clearly way down in popularity. Community: Season Three was in fifth place 77,000 units / $1.53 million during its first week of release. This about 18,000 more units than season two sold, so the studio should be happy with that growth.
The Raid: Redemption was right behind in sixth place with 53,000 units / $895,000, which is very strong for a limited release.
