International Box Office: Wrath is Titanic Internationally

April 11, 2012

Wrath of the Titans is really struggling domestically, but it could mitigate some of the losses here with its box office numbers internationally. This weekend it added $42.1 million on 13,070 screens in 61 markets for a total of $151.6 million. Its best market of the weekend was Russia, where it earned $4.09 million on 1,116 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.55 million after two. It has yet to open in Japan, and if it can get to $300 million worldwide, it should break even very early in the film's home market run.

Titanic 3D debuted in second place with $35.31 million on 5,746 screens in 84 markets for an early worldwide total of $60.96 million. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $4.53 million on 427 screens and in Italy with $3.08 million on 352. Meanwhile, it had to settle for second place in Russia with $5.19 million on 972 screens, in France with $4.00 million on 331, and in Germany with $3.29 million on 470. This doesn't include China where it opened on Tuesday with a massive $11.6 million on 2,400 screens, including $1 million on 64 IMAX screens. At this pace, the film will reach $2 billion worldwide by the time its re-release is over.

The Hunger Games slipped to third place with $27.23 million on 6,778 screens in 60 markets for a total of $159.43 million internationally and $461.88 million worldwide. Its only major market opening of the week was South Korea, where it placed second with $1.82 million on 511 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.08 million. The film has already made more than enough to cover its production and P&A budgets, while at this pace, the movie film will have no trouble getting to $500 million by this time next week and could reach $600 million worldwide. If it does reach that milestone, then it will have made enough profit to pay for the next two films in the franchise.

American Reunion was next with an opening of $19.48 million on 2,442 screens in 28 markets. It only opened in a couple major markets, led by Russia at $5.36 million on 628 screens and in Australia with $4.99 million on 330. It placed first in both markets. It is still too early to tell where this film will end up, but this is a good start.

Mirror Mirror was close behind with $17.59 million on 4,523 screens in 38 markets for a total of $39.36 million after close to a month of release. It opened in second place in Brazil with $2.52 million on 426 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.65 million, as well as in Italy with $2.04 million on 387 over the weekend for a total opening of $2.48 million. It only managed third place in Mexico with $1.49 million on 764 screens for a total opening of $1.87 million. It is already ahead of its domestic pace on the international scene, and it has yet to open in many major markets. However, it cost a lot to make, so it will need to stick around for a while before it comes close to breaking even.

Up next was the first of two foreign films, Houba! On The Trail Of The Marsupilami, with $14.93 million on 871 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $15.18 million. Almost all of this came from France, where it dominated the market with $13.87 million on 805 screens.

Housefull 2 opened in seventh place with $13.25 million on 3,000 screens in the usual markets. This is an excellent opening for a Bollywood film.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax fell to eighth place with $10.89 million on 3,536 screens in 46 markets for a total of $58.04 million after a month of release. The film opened in a number of smaller markets leaving Spain as its number one draw over the weekend. There the film added $2.12 million on 588 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.77 million after two.

The Pirates! Band Of Misfits was right behind with $10.01 million on 4,011 screens in 29 markets for a total of $25.21 million after two weeks of release. The film opened in Italy, but struggled with $969,000 on 417 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.14 million. It was even weaker in Australia opening in ninth place with $889,000 on 425 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.19 million. On the other hand, it remains strong in the U.K. with $3.44 million on 551 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.24 million after two.

Intouchables was the second French film in the top ten with $7.77 million on 1,876 screens in 12 markets for a total of $291.66 million after roughly five months of release. At this point, getting to $300 million worldwide is a formality.
