Per Theater Chart: Hustle Speeds to the Top

American Hustle started its box office run in limited release with a stunning average of $123,409. This is the second best per theater average for the year, behind only Frozen. Saving Mr. Banks opened in 15 theaters earning an average of $27,558. It should do well in its upcoming expansion. Inside Llewyn Davis expanded, playing in 15 theaters over the weekend while its per theater average fell to $23,786. It will continue to expand. The overall box office leader, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, was the final film in the $10,000 club earning an average of $18,869.

Most of the rest of the new limited releases performed very poorly. Liv and Ingmar was the best of the rest with an average of $2,726 in two theaters. Nuclear Nation earned $2,268 in its lone theater over the weekend for a total opening of $3,600. Marius was playing in nine theaters , but only managed an average of $1,503. Blood Brother was even weaker with $1,333 in one theater. Here Comes the Devil was the final new limited release we have numbers for and it only made $783 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Nebraska crossed $3 million over the weekend and it should get to $4 million by this time next week.
• Philomena hit $10 million over the weekend and shouldn't have too much trouble getting to $15 million.
• 12 Years a Slave surpassed $35 million and it is now just ahead of Carrie and just behind The Family.
