International Box Office: Gravity Grows

October 30, 2013

Gravity earned first place for the fourth week with $37.7 million on 7,340 screens in 53 markets for a total of $164.4 million internationally and $364.0 million worldwide. This weekend it debuted in first place in France with a very impressive $10.76 million on 398 screens. It also remained in first place in South Korea with $5.29 million on 531 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $15.55 million. It also repeated in top spot in Mexico with $3.79 million on 1,563 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.04 million after two. The film will likely pull in close to $100 million in just these holdovers, plus it has yet to open in the U.K., Japan and China, so it could make another $100 million in those three markets as well.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 returned to the top ten in second place with $16.94 million on 5,514 screens in 42 markets for a running tally of $49.73 million after a month of release. Its biggest and best market was the U.K. where it placed second over the weekend with $3.42 million on 928 screens, while it pulled in $5.92 million including previews. It also earned second place in Germany with $2.53 million on 960 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.90 million. It wasn't quite as strong in Russia, where it placed third with $3.88 million on 1,185 screens.

Turbo remained in third place with $14.3 million on 5,393 screens in 23 markets for totals of $164.9 million internationally and $247.6 million worldwide. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but it had a total opening of $1.18 million on 140 screens in Belgium, including $618,000 over the weekend. It grew in France earning $6.20 million on 664 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.81 million after two weeks of release.

Captain Phillips rose to fourth place with $12.47 million on 3,135 screens in 32 markets for a still early total of $27.05 million. On the one hand, it earned first place in Australia with $2.12 million on 335 screens. On the other hand, it only managed fifth place in South Korea with $670,000 on 305 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $998,000.

Jackass Presents: Bad-Grandpa made its international debut in fifth place with $8.1 million on 1,014 screens in 16 markets. The film's biggest market was the U.K., where it placed third with $3.14 million on 372 screens. Its best market was Germany, where it earned first place with $3.10 million on 285 screens.

Escape Plan earned sixth place with $7.0 million in 44 markets for totals of $28.1 million. It debuted in China this weekend, but no details were available.

The Wolverine was right behind with $6.7 million on 3,360 screens in China. Internationally, the film has $275.1 million, while its worldwide total rose to $407.3 million. Granted, the film cost more than $100 million to make, but reaching the $400 million milestone worldwide is at least enough to ensure a profit early in the film's home market run, if it hasn't already broken even.

Stalingrad fell from fourth place to eighth place with $6.02 million on 1,262 screens in 2 markets for a three-week total of $46.13 million. It is no longer in first place in its native Russia, but it has already made more than its $30 million production budget and if the war epic can find an audience outside of Russia and the Ukraine, it could be very profitable.

Now you See Me returned to the top ten in ninth place with $5.6 million in 19 markets for totals of $234.0 million internationally and $351.7 million worldwide. This weekend, the film made its final debut in Japan earning third place with $1.03 million on 182 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.30 million.

Prisoners rounded out the top ten with $5.1 million in 50 markets for a total of $42.4 million internationally and $101.5 million worldwide.

Despicable Me 2 fell out of the top ten, but it did crack $900 million on the worldwide chart since this time last week. Meanwhile, Planes topped $200 million worldwide, which is excellent for a film that started out in development as a direct-to-DVD release.
