Per Theater Chart: Gravity Escapes Massive Competition
October 9, 2013
There were a ton of new releases this week, but Gravity was pulled down by the mass of new releases. It lead the way on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $15,604. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Linsanity, which earned an average of $11,051 in nine theaters.
There were several new limited releases that did rather well, but also more than a few that bombed. A Touch of Sin did very well with an average of $9,934 in two theaters. The Face Reader earned an average of $8,406 in 19 theaters, which is an excellent start, especially for that theater count. Likewise, Pulling Strings's per theater average was strong at $6,375, which is a good opening; however, it was playing in 387 theaters, which makes it an excellent start. A.C.O.D. was right behind with an average of $6,334 in three theaters. Five Dances opened in just one theater with $5,788, while Let the Fire Burn earned $5,226 in one theater over the weekend and $7,735 from Wednesday through Sunday. Concussion was not as strong with an average of $4,108 in two theaters.
The Summit earned an average of $2,613 in eight theaters. That's weak, but not nearly as bad as it got this weekend. Dislecksia: The Movie opened with $2,213 in its lone theater. Grace Unplugged opened with nearly $1 million over the weekend and normally that would be fantastic for a limited release. However, it was playing in more that 500 theaters, so its average was just $1,953. It wasn't the only film to miss the Mendoza Line. Besharam opened in 217 theaters with an average of just $1,792. Nothing Left to Fear only managed an average of $1,577 in five theaters, but that still wasn't the weakest new release of the weekend. Parkland was one of a few films playing in more than 200 theaters, but it only managed an average of $1,207. Argento's Dracula 3D was well back with an average of $514 in six theaters. Meanwhile All is Bright and Bad Milo had very similar averages of $456 and $409 respectively.
This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:
