Blu-ray Sales: A Whole Host of New Releases

The week of July 14th, 2013 was a bit strange on the home market, as the Blu-ray sales chart and the DVD sales chart didn't line up very well. Granted, in both cases, new releases dominated, but unlike on DVD, The Host led the way on Blu-ray. It sold 103,000 units and generated $2.38 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 42%, which isn't bad for a film with a decidedly weak box run.
Despicable Me slipped to second place with 78,000 units / $1.01 million of the week for totals of 2.42 million units / $59.30 million. It is now in 12th place on the All-time Blu-ray sales chart, not counting the pre-July 21, 2009 sales. Tyler Perry's Temptation only managed third place on Blu-ray with 65,000 units / $1.29 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of just 14%. This is low for a first-run release, but not unexpected, as Tyler Perry films rarely do well on Blu-ray. Dead Man Down was right behind with 64,000 units / $1.21 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 37%. This is better than expected given its genre and its box office numbers. The Alien Anthology box set jumped into fifth place with 38,000 units / $1.23 million for the week. It has now sold 148,000 units and generated $7.90 million in total sales.
Spring Breakers just missed the top five with 36,000 units / $650,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 28%. This is a good start for a drama, especially one that debuted in limited release. Admission did better on Blu-ray than it did on DVD earning seventh place with 35,000 units / $800,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 40%. This is stunningly strong for a comedy. The Legend of Korra: Book One Air earned 12th place with 17,000 units / $409,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 31%, which is great for a TV on DVD release.
