DVD Sales: Braving the Competition

January 15, 2013

Catching up on the home market, we see that the top of the November 18th DVD chart was dominated by new releases, with three of them in the top five. This includes Brave with a very impressive opening of 2.16 million units / $34.51 million. This was enough to place in the top ten for 2012, and it has already climbed several more spots. The Amazing Spider-Man held on well after a shortened first week adding 474,000 units / $8.51 million giving it early totals of 1.01 million units / $18.13 million. Tinker Bell: Secret of the Wings slipped a spot to third with 172,000 units / $3.42 million for the week giving it totals of 1.58 million units / $29.35 million after nearly a month of release. If there were any doubts about the future for this franchise, they should end. Savages opened in fourth place with 163,000 units / $2.77 million during its first week of release. I think it is fair to say people were expecting more. Likewise, The Watch struggled selling just 153,000 units and earning $2.61 million in revenue. A lot of people thought this would be a $100 million movie at the box office, but that wasn't the case. But even with its box office struggles, it should have sold more than this.

Strangely, while there were three new releases in the top five, there were no other new releases in the top 30.
