DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 25th, 2014

November 25, 2014

It is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, which means there are only a few days before Black Friday, which is one of the busiest shopping days of the season. At first glance, this might seem like a great day to release a DVD or Blu-ray; however, the massive sales will instead overshadow anything that comes out this week. This explains why there are so few interesting releases. The biggest release of the week is The Expendables 3 on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack, but it might be so bad it killed the franchise. The best release is Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Turkey Day Collection (XXXI), which is the Pick of the Week. We also have a Puck of the Week for Rhymes for Young Ghouls on DVD, a Canadian film that deserves a wider audience.

2014 World Series Champions: San Francisco Giants - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Real fans want full games and not just under two hours of highlights.

Adventure Time: Finn the Human - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Great show, but I would stick with the full-season Blu-ray releases.

Better Off Ted: Season Two - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is a great show that was canceled too soon. However, the price-per-minute is high for a TV on DVD release. I'll probably pick it up, but I will likely wait for a sale to do so.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: L'avventura, The Conformist, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Juice in the Hood, Genesis: Sum of the Parts, Les Blank: Always for Pleasure, Log Horizon: Collection 1, The Long Goodbye, Masterpiece Mystery: Inspector Lewis 7, Nymphomaniac: Extended Director's Cut Vol. 1 & 2, Sailor Moon: Season 1, Part 1, Samurai Cop, Shock Waves, and Thieves Like Us
There are a few secondary Blu-ray releases, including a Criterion Collection release. However, I think Shock Waves is the most interesting release of the week.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon: A Merry Friggin' Christmas and Night Terrors
Only two Christmas releases this week, and one of them is a horror film.

Drunk History Seasons 1 and 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I was hoping to get a copy of this show to review. It sounds awesome. The basic setup is this... a historian tells a story about a historically significant event while a group of well-known actors act out what they say. However, the historian is drunk and getting drunker as they tell the story.

The Equalizer: Season 4 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The fourth and final season of this 1980s action show comes out on DVD this week. It's a good show, but the DVD sets are pricier than most similar 1980s releases.

The Expendables 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The worst film in the franchise, both in terms of box office numbers and critical appeal. Going PG-13 appears to have been a mistake. The Blu-ray does include the "unrated" edition, but from what I've read, it too would have been rated PG-13. The extras are good, but that's not enough to recommend the movie.

The Giver - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
One of several Young Adult Adaptations that came out this year. Most were really bad, but this one struggled at the box office more so than the average. I think the reason why this film struggled is simple. It is not a popular book. Sure, a lot of people have read it, but that's because schools force them to. Extras are sadly average, so the overall value is mediocre, at best.

I Couldn't Become a Hero So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job, a Part Time Job - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I mentioned this show last week, but it turns out I had the name wrong. It's even longer than I thought. I mentioned the phenomenon of really long Anime names to a friend and he pointed out that the names are somewhat shorter in Japanese.

A Merry Friggin Christmas - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of Robin Williams' last films. It earned terrible reviews and failed to find an audience in theaters. Maybe it will perform better on the home market, but there are far too many better films to remember Robin Willams.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Turkey Day Collection (XXXI) - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This remains one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Getting full-season sets is a dream, mainly because it will never happen in real life. (The rights of some films would be nearly impossible to get.) This set includes four episodes, all of which are very good, plus new extras including introductions, a look at the Turkey Day MST3K marathons, and more. Absolutely worth picking up and easily the best release of the week.

Naruto Shippuden Road to Ninja: The Movie 6 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Recently the Manga that this animated series is based on came to an end. I'm certain fans of the franchise will snap up this movie A.S.A.P.

The November Man - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A late summer bomb that failed to connect with critics or moviegoers. The extras are fine (audio commentary track and a pair of featurettes), but that's not enough to compensate for the quality of the film.

Rhymes for Young Ghouls - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A Canadian film that earn excellent reviews, but failed to find an audience in theaters. Hopefully it will find an audience on the home market, because it deserves to be seen by more.

Note: This Blu-ray made its home market debut, but I honestly don't know when.

Step Up All In - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This installment was by far the weakest in the franchise at the box office. Was it also the weakest in terms of quality? Read our review to find out.

TV on DVD Full Series Megasets - Buy from Amazon: Jeeves & Wooster, Upstairs Downstairs, and When Calls the Heart
Of the trio of Full-series Megasets on this week's list, Jeeves & Wooster is the one I'm most interested in; however, I don't think this is the first time it has come out.

Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A bad movie that missed expectations at the box office. It will likely break even some time on the home market, but Tyler Perry is no longer a moneymaking machine. Also coming out this week is Hell Hath no Fury Like a Woman Scorned on DVD.

What If - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This movie earned good reviews, but not great reviews. Likewise, it opened well in limited release, but struggled once it expanded. Finally, the extras on the DVD and Blu-ray are lackluster. It adds up to a solid rental, but nothing more.
