Per Theater Chart: Holdovers Feeling Lonely

It was a slow week for new releases as none topped $10,000 on the per theater chart. There were some holdovers that performed well, led by Lone Survivor, which pulled in an average of $42,429 in two theaters. This is compared to $45,436 during its opening weekend. Such a small decline is great news for its upcoming wide expansion. August: Osage County was next with an average of $27,983 in five theaters, which is 22% lower than its opening average of $35,860. Its running tally is already at nearly half a million and it has potential to expand, especially if it continues to do well during Awards Season. The final film in the $10,000 club was Her with an average of $15,378 in 47 theaters. It is already at nearly $3 million after three weeks of release and it expands wide this weekend.

We don't have the numbers for many new limited releases. In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter did well with $6,100 in its lone theater. The Best Offer struggled with $2,595, also in one theater.

Now for a bit of getting caught up. The Invisible Woman opened with an average of $12,383 in three theaters on the final weekend of 2013. It was third best for the week, behind Lone Survivor and August: Osage County, which I mentioned above. Her opened the weekend before Christmas earning an average of $43,397 in six theaters.

There have been a number of milestones reached in the past few weeks:

• Her cracked $2 million before the weekend and it likely crossed $3 million on Monday.
• Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom expanded semi-wide helping it get to $5 million. It might get to $10 million, but it is far from a sure thing.
• Inside Llewyn Davis had not reached $1 million the last time we had full weekend numbers. It reached $5 million since then and is well on its way to $10 million.
• Nebraska reached $5 million the previous weekend and if it can continue to earn nominations during Awards Season (and possibly a win or two) it could get to $10 million.
• Dallas Buyers Club has reached $15 million, but that's as far as it will go.
• Philomena surpassed $15 million since last time and it is really close to $20 million.
• As expected, The Book Thief topped $15 million since last time and it too is close to $20 million.
