Limited Release: Voicing Their Opinion
February 6, 2015
Like last week, this week's list is more of a highlights. It is the heart of Oscar season, so it is hard to have the time to research all dozen plus limited releases coming out each week. Additionally, this week most of the limited releases are opening with no buzz and bad reviews and many of them are only coming out in theaters to boost their Video on Demand release. That is not to say there are no good new releases coming out... there are three films earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Two of those are documentaries and the other, The Voices, is coming out on Video on Demand. It is going to be a really bad weekend at the box office for limited releases.
Ballet 422 - Reviews
Love, Rosie - Reviews
Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine - Reviews
Outcast - Reviews
Shamitabh - No Reviews
The Voices - Reviews
A documentary about the behind-the-scenes preparations needed to pull off an original ballet. The film's reviews are excellent, especially compared to most of the new releases coming out this week. However, it is a documentary, so its chance of expanding significantly are very limited.
This limited release is earning much better buzz than most limited releases do, but its reviews show it is a case of hype. Even for a romantic comedy, this film's reviews are bad. Also, it is opening on Video on Demand, so its box office chances are even worse.
One of the few films on this week's list that is earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. This is a documentary about Matt Shepard, who was the victim of one of the most notorious hate crimes committed against the LGBT community. Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine opens tonight in three theaters with planned expansions over the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
Is Nicolas Cage's career going to recover? He choice in roles has been really bad lately.
A Bollywood film opening with no reviews. It will very likely be the biggest hit on this week's list, at least in terms of opening weekend total. I don't know how well it will do on the per theater chart.
This film is black comedy, which is a genre that is rarely successful. However, the reviews are excellent for the genre. On the other hand, it is going Video on Demand. Unlike most of the rest of the Video on Demand films coming out this week, this one has a great cast and could actually do well.
