Blu-ray Sales: No Reward for Good Deeds

January 24, 2015

The first set of new releases for Blu-ray didn't result in a change at the top, as The Equalizer remained on top of the chart during its sophomore stint. Over the week, it sold $143,000 / $3.48 million for two-week totals of 821,000 units / $17.08 million. This gives it a two-week Blu-ray share of 51%, which is good for an action film. It does have a slightly older target demographic, so that explains why it isn't as good as say... Guardians of the Galaxy remained in second place with 75,000 units / $1.80 million over the weekend for totals of 3.75 million units / $78.90 million. As I mentioned, its Blu-ray share was 62%. The best new releases of the week was No Good Deed, which opened in third place with 68,000 units / $1.33 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 29%; this is low, but not totally unexpected. Boyhood was next with 56,000 units / $1.23 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 63%, which is really high for a limited release drama. Get on Up rounded out the top five with 51,000 / $1.05 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 37%, which is okay for a drama.

There were a number of other new releases to chart this week, including Left Behind, which debuted in seventh place with just 47,000 units / $713,000. Its opening week Blu-ray average was just 19%, which is terrible, even for a film like this. Horns opened in ninth place with 28,000 units / $361,000, which is good for a limited released. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 35%, which is okay for a limited release. Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt? only managed 14th place 19,000 units / $357,000, which is a sad end for a bad franchise. Up next was a TV on DVD release, the First Season of Black Sails, which opened in 16th place with 16,000 units / $422,000 for an opening Blu-ray share of 43%. The Guest only managed 18th spot with 15,000 / $344,000, but that's not bad for a limited release. Likewise, its opening week Blu-ray share was 34%, which is not bad for a limited release. The final new release in the top ten was Archer: The Complete Fifth Season, which landed in 20th with 14,000 units / $400,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 31%, which is good for a TV on DVD release.
