International Box Office: Taken Takes Top Spot

Taken 3 rose to first place during its third weekend of release earning $31.4 million in 49 markets for an international total of $99.0 million. Its biggest debut of the weekend was in the Philippines, where it earned first place with $2.5 million on 218 screens. It also earned first place in Russia, but with only $1.80 million on 1,438. Its biggest market was the U.K., where it remained in first place with $5.00 million in 500 theaters for a two-week total on $18.55 million.
Seventh Son rocketed to second place with $21.7 million in 35 markets for a four-week total of $60.5 million. It should have no trouble reaching $100 million internationally, which will put a lot less pressure on its domestic run. Of this, $16.08 million was earned in China giving it first place over the weekend.
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb slipped to third place with $17.8 million in 66 markets for totals of $179.9 million internationally and $284.7 million worldwide after a month of release. Its only major market opening was in South Korea where it earned third place with $2.73 million on 500 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.56 million.
Penguins of Madagascar rose to fourth place with $16.3 million in 50 markets for totals of $225.6 million internationally and $306.2 million worldwide after ten weeks of release. Its biggest new market was Brazil, where the film earned first place with $5.1 million on 911 screens.
Exodus: Gods and Kings slipped a spot to fourth with $10.9 million in 60 markets for totals of $185.8 million internationally and $250.1 million worldwide. Getting to this milestone will help the studio save face, but it will need a lot more if it is to break even any time soon. The film did well in Italy earning first place with $3.3 million on 644 screens.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies fell from third to sixth with $9.8 million in 62 markets over the weekend for totals of $558.6 million internationally and $803.2 million worldwide. The film debuts in China this weekend, so it should climb back up the chart.
American Sniper entered the top ten in seventh place with $9.3 million in 7 markets over the weekend for an early total $25.36 million. The film's biggest opening of the weekend was in the U.K, where it earned $3.84 million in 410 theaters. On the other hand, it only managed seventh place in South Korea with $805,000 on 303 screens for a total opening of $1.10 million.
Miss Granny remained in second place in China with $9 million over the weekend, while its running tally rose to $39.48 million after two weeks of release.
The Theory of Everything returned to the top ten in ninth place with $8 million in 21 markets over the weekend for a three-week total of $31 million. The film opened in second place in Spain with $1 million on 214 screens and in third place in Italy with $1.5 million on 291. Its best market was the U.K. where it earned third place with $3.53 million in 553 theaters for a total of $18.09 million after three weeks of release.
Into The Woods remained in tenth place with $7.3 million in 20 markets for a total of $26.0 million. Impressively, the film dipped only 19% in the U.K. to $3.03 million in 484 theaters for a two-week total of $8.13 million in that market.
P.K. fell out of the top ten a couple of weeks ago, but it was announced that the film has crossed $100 million worldwide, becoming the first Bollywood film to do so. At the end of the weekend, the film had totals of $75.60 million in India, $15.39 million in the rest of the international markets, $10.51 million in North America, for a worldwide total of $101.50 million.
