The Writers Guild of America nominations were latest to be announced, but were there any real surprises? Yes. Birdman didn't get a nomination, but Guardians of the Galaxy did. More on that later. Besides those two films, there are not a lot of surprises here and the usual contenders are present, including Boyhood and The Imitation Game, but there are also some other notable films missing.

The categories and nominees are...

Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Documentary Screenplay

Notes and Reactions...

  • Boyhood looks like the favorite for Original Screenplay, while it looks like a two-way race between Gone Girl and The Imitation Game for adapted screenplay.
  • I hope Oscar voters are paying attention to Guardians of the Galaxy's nomination. The main reason to go to ten potential Best Picture Oscar nominations was to give films in genre not typically nominated for these awards a chance to get a nomination. Instead, we've seen too many second-tier Oscar-bait movies get selected ahead of much better, but more populous films.
  • There were a trio of films missing from the list of nominees: Birdman, Selma, and The Theory of Everything. None of them were eligible for WGAs, so we can't use this against them when it comes to their Oscar chances.
  • The documentary list is less standard with none of these films on the PGA list, for example. Then again, the nominations for documentaries for the various Awards Season voters tend to have a lot of variations between them.
