Synopsis

In 1959, the spiritual and political leader of Tibet, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, escapes the Chinese invasion of his country and establishes his government in exile in Dharamsala, India, along with 100,000 refugees. This exodus made the mysterious realm of Tibetan Buddhism accessible to the larger world for the first time in history. In the forty years since it landed, Tibetan Buddhism has spread into every corner of the western world: it is the fastest growing religion in Australia, there are 20 Tibetan Buddhist retreat centers in France, HHDL draws a crowd of 20,000 in a football stadium in Buffalo…even Dog, The Bounty Hunter knows about Karma. "Everything has two sides," Tsoknyi Rinpoche says in the film. “Unfortunate side is we lost our country. Fortunate side is dharma went all over the world.” WHEN THE IRON BIRD FLIES takes a deep look at this phenomena and asks how, exactly, did the Buddhadharma travel from the Land of Snow to the consciousness laboratories of today? And what new spiritual tradition is emerging from this unprecedented collaboration between East & West?
