While it's not common for a box set to lead the way on the Blu-ray sales chart, it is also no real surprise that Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition Trilogy managed to do just that, as it was clearly the biggest new release of the week. It took top spot with sales of 336,000 units, and thanks to its premium pricing, it generated $25.21 million in opening week consumer spending.

While plenty of new releases reached the top of this week's sales chart, none were exactly burning up the chart. Leading the way was Sucker Punch, but with only 275,000 units / $4.13 million during its opening week on the chart. Season of the Witch could claim a share of first place with $4.28 million in opening week sales from 265,000 units sold.

It's a bit of a madhouse in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases this week: Amazon.com has more than 400 listed. That said, a lot of them are catalogue titles that would barely warrant a mention during a slow week. The most intriguing first run release is Sucker Punch on Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy Combo Pack, but while I think it's worth picking up, it's appeal is limited enough that it is not worthy of the Pick of the Week honors. Fortunately, one of the catalogue titles is clearly Pick of the Week material. In fact, Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Edition - Blu-ray is one of the most anticipated releases in the history of Blu-ray.

The Warrior's Way was co-written and directed by Sngmoo Lee, who was making his debut in both jobs. The film stars Dong-Gun Jang, who was making his English-language debut. It was a pretty risky bet giving an unproven writer / director more than $40 million to make a movie that is a fusion of Martial Arts movies and Westerns starring an actor that most people have never previously seen act. It's a gamble that didn't pay off and it became one of the biggest bombs of 2010. Now that it is out on DVD and Blu-ray, will find a larger audience? Will it at least find a cult following?

While there are three wide releases opening next week, only one has a shot at top spot. In fact, even though Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens on Wednesday, it should still earn more from Friday through Sunday than the other two movies combined and it is the obvious choice for target film in this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of The Warrior's Way on DVD.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of The Warrior's Way on DVD.
Finally, one additional entrant will be chosen and they will win the final copy of The Warrior's Way on DVD.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

Well that sucked. Both new releases underperformed at the box office this past weekend, by a large margin. In fact, combined Dawn Treader and The Tourist earned less than many were thinking Dawn Treader alone would earn. Needless to say, this hurt the overall box office. It was still able to grow by 6.5% from last weekend to $92 million, but that's more than 5% lower than the same weekend last year, and the same weekend last year was a disappointment to begin with. 2010 still has a lead over 2009, but that lead is down to 1.5% at $9.90 billion to $9.75 billion, and by this time next weekend, that lead could be cut in half. And by the end of Christmas weekend, it could be gone entirely.

The past weekend brought very little holiday cheer and the box office plummeted more than 50% from last weekend to just $86 million. To be fair, this was a post-holiday weekend, so that decline was expected, if a little more extreme than we would like. However, it was 13% lower than the same weekend last year and there's no way to sugarcoat that. Year-to-date 2010 still has a lead over 2009, but that lead is now under 2% at $9.78 billion to $9.63 billion. This means in less than a month 2010's lead has been cut in half. This is not a good sign going forward.

The weekend after the Thanksgiving long weekend is historically one of the weakest weekends of the year, and by far the weakest during the winter holiday season that runs from November to New Year's. This year it is no exception with only one wide release, The Warrior's Way, and it's not even opening truly wide. This means for the second weekend in a row, there will be a holdover leading the way. However, it might not be the same holdover as last weekend. As for last year, there were three wide releases, none of which did well, but all of which provide some indication on how The Warrior's Way might perform.

It's the end of the year and there are certainly some question marks that will be answered over the next 31 days. Are there any monster hits left for 2010? Will 2010 manage to stay ahead of 2009? Will it actually start winning again at the box office? Unfortunately, the answer to all three of those questions might be no. First of all, of the November wide releases, only two will really match expectations, with a couple of others coming close. So December starts on the weak side. Additionally, last December saw the release of Avatar, the biggest box office hit of all time. There's no film coming out this month that will match that movie. In fact, there's a chance no movie coming out this month will match last December's second place film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. This means that even though 2010 had a $300 million lead over 2009 just a few weeks ago, by the end of the year, 2010 might fail to break last year's record.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually the slowest weekend at the box office for the entire winter holiday run, and this year is no different. In fact, there's just one film opening wide, The Warrior's Way, and it is not even opening truly wide. Could be a tough week for predictions. Winners will receive a selection of exercise DVDs, which is great timing, as Thanksgiving is associated with overeating like no other holiday out there. I certainly overate last month when we celebrated the holiday up here in Canada. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for The Warrior's Way .
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Jane Fonda: Fit and Strong on DVD, Jillian Michaels: Six Week Six-Pack on DVD, and Dancing with the Stars: Fat-Burning Cardio Dance on DVD.
Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Jane Fonda: Walk On on DVD and Dancing with the Stars: Ballroom Buns and Abs on DVD.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!
