Synopsis

London-based investigative journalist Robert Torres visits Spain to research a book about Josemaría Escrivá, the controversial founder of Opus Dei. But Robert hits a wall, both professionally and personally, when his most promising source-his own father, Manolo Torres, turns out to be his least cooperative one. Robert begins to unearth his father’s toxic secrets when he learns that Manolo was not only born in the same Spanish town as Josemaría, but that they were childhood friends and attended the same seminary. The two men take radically different paths in life, with Josemaría dedicating his life to his faith while Manolo is swept into the brutal and tumultuous Spanish Civil War. Manolo descends into a dangerous and jealous obsession when the beautiful Hungarian revolutionary Ildiko doesn’t return his affections and instead gives herself to the courageous military leader, Oriol.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 10th, 2012

January 9th, 2012

It's a pretty good week on the home market, for this time of year, with a number of releases that are worth checking out. This includes big budget releases, like Moneyball on Blu-ray Combo Pack, as well as TV on DVD releases like Doctor Who: Story 71: Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Story 83: The Android Invasion, as well as smaller releases like Higher Ground on Blu-ray Combo Pack. Unfortunately, it's not a particularly deep week for releases, and it isn't long before we start getting to DVDs and Blu-rays that would be ignored during a typically busy week. Not only that, but I'm still waiting for screeners for a number of bigger releases. One of these, Boardwalk Empire: Season One on Blu-ray, is the most likely candidate for Pick of the Week. More...

Per Theater Chart: Midnight Burns Bright

May 24th, 2011

Midnight in Paris had the best per screen average for the year so far and came within a rounding error of topping $100,000. The film opened with $599,003 in 6 theaters for an average of $99,834, which represents a career best for Woody Allen. Add in its Oscar-worthy reviews, and there's no telling where it could go. The overall number one film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was the only other film to crack $10,000 on the per theater chart, as it opened with an average of $21,697. More...

Per Theater Chart: Thor's Lonely on Top

May 10th, 2011

Thor was the only film to top the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart with an average of $16,618 in just under 4,000 theaters. Fast Five did come reasonably close to that mark with an average of $8,860, while the best limited release was Cave of Forgotten Dreams with $8,059. More...

Weekend Estimates: Thor Strikes with Mighty Opening

May 8th, 2011

Thor couldn't quite emulate Fast Five's debut, but a very solid $66,000,000 opening weekend for the Marvel superhero movie keeps the promising early Summer season rolling along very nicely. Respectable weekends for Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed also helped this weekend continue the winning streak over 2010. More...

Limited Releases Try to Take on God of Thunder

May 6th, 2011

It is officially the beginning of summer, at least according to the movie industry. And while most eyes are on Thor, there's a bundle of limited releases trying to compete for limited box office dollars. I'm not overly bullish on most film's chances. There are a few films opening in way too many theaters, some that are opening with Tomatometer scores that would be terrible for wide releases, etc. There are also a few with good reviews or some advanced buzz, but going the limited release route is always a risk. Let's hope some can escape it. More...
