DVD Releases for February 6, 2007

February 5th, 2007

It's the first Tuesday of the month and, like many months, it's a busy week for DVDs. Busy, but not necessarily that strong. Looking at the more than three dozen releases on this week's list, there's little here that I would consider DVD Pick of the Week material. No first-run releases came even close, but there were a trio of other contenders: Eddie Murphy - Delirious - Buy from Amazon, Hellboy - Sword of Storms - Buy from Amazon, and The Science of Sleep - Buy from Amazon. It is safe to say all three will end up in my ever-growing DVD collection, but Eddie Murphy - Delirious - Buy from Amazon alone is the DVD Pick of the Week. I think that's the first time a stand-up concert film has earned that honor. More...

Movie Queen's Reign Rivals Real Royalty

October 17th, 2006

The Queen led the per theatre charts for the third weekend in a row, taking in an average of $22,228 in its 46 theatres. Granted, the film has a while to catch up to the more than 50 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II, but this is still a very rare feat for a film to accomplish. Second place went to newcomer Sweet Land with an unexpected opening weekend average of $20,930. The only other film to top $10,000 was Little Children as the film held up very well, dipping less than 14% to $16,910. More...

Queen's Royal Reign Continues

October 10th, 2006

For the second weekend in a row, The Queen top the per theatre charts with an average of $36,543, down just over 10%. This is even more impressive since the movie saw its theatre count climb from 3 to 11. Little Children came in next after earning nearly $100,000 in 5 theatres for an average of $19,591 while Shortbus earned just over $100,000 in 6 theatres for an average of $17,985. The former film has a much better shot at earning some mainstream success as the latter is just too much for the average moviegoer. More...

Royalty Rule the Per Theatre Chart

October 3rd, 2006

The Queen was crowned champion of the per theatre charts this weekend after it earned an astounding $122,000 in 3 theatres for an average of $40,671. Even more impressive is the fact that it earned that in just two days as Friday's debut was actually part of the New York Film Festival and not a theatrical release. Second place went to another regally titled film, The Last King of Scotland; this film brought in $143,000 in 4 theatres for an average of $35,725. Even more impressive is the fact that it opened on Wednesday, which undoubtedly kept its weekend box office lower than it otherwise would have been. Both films seemed poised to earn some measure of mainstream success, which will really help their chances come awards season. There were two other films to top $10,000 on the per theatre charts, Old Joy at $13,029 and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints at $11,848. More...

Sound as Science

September 26th, 2006

The Science of Sleep started its theatrical run atop the per theatre charts with nearly $350,000 in 14 theatres for an average of $24,852. The studio hopes to expand the film into 200 theatres this weekend but it is too soon to tell if the film will be able to attract an audience outside the art house circuit. Second place went to American Hardcore as the documentary took in $18,102 in its lone theatre. Next up were a pair of holdovers with Old Joy earning $17,556 in one theatre, which is more than it made during its entire, nearly month-long release. Finally, Keeping Mum fell just 25.67% to just over $20,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $10,077. More...

International Details - House hasn't become a Monster Hit

August 28th, 2006

Monster House climbed one spot to sixth with $4.48 million on 1498 screens in 14 markets for total of $20.33 million at the international box office. The film added two more midlevel markets but bombed in both. In the Netherlands the film missed the top ten with $89,000 on 65 screens over the weekend and $100,000 in total while it was only slightly better in Poland earning sixth place with $71,000 on 48 screens. Holdovers, on the other hand, were better than expected with the film down a mere 16% during its second weekend in the U.K. with $1.61 million on 425 screens for a total of $5.83 million. More...

Movie Website Updates for July 15 - July 21

July 21st, 2006

Another busy week, but unlike last week there was no massive blockbuster launching its flash site. Two sites stood out this week, (not counting past winners), and they are wildly different both in terms of style and in terms of the movie they are selling: Accepted - Official Site and World Trade Center - Official Site. The former is goofy and seriously immature, while the latter is one of the most emotional sites I've ever seen. In was nearly a coin flip, but in the end I went with Accepted - Official Site, but I would be willing to bet the other site will win before the movie comes out. More...
