DVD Sales - Living for the Home Market

December 3rd, 2007

New releases were not plentiful on the sales chart this week, but they dominated the top five by taking three spots. This includes Live Free or Die Hard in first place with 2.06 million units sold and $35.11 million in total sales. More...

DVD Rentals - Die Hard far from Free

December 3rd, 2007

Like on the sales chart, Live Free or Die Hard led the way in rentals with $12.42 million during its first week of release, which makes it one of the best renting new releases of the year. More...

It's the official start of award season as the Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced. Several films received nods, but I'm Not There and Juno were the big hits. More...

DVD Releases for November 20, 2007 - Part II

November 20th, 2007

Another big list of DVD releases, including nearly a dozen spotlight reviews. And again, we had to split the list into two parts. There is also a number of high quality releases this week making the selection for DVD Pick of the Week tough to make. Live Free or Die Hard had me interested, either the Unrated 2-Disc Edition or as part of the Blu-Ray Die Hard Collection, but in the end I went with Star Trek - The Original Series - Season 1 - HD-DVD/DVD Combo. Even at that price, it is still the best on this week's list. More...

Documentaries are Super on the Per Theater Chart

August 21st, 2007

A handful of films crossed the $10,000 mark this past weekend led by The 11th Hour with just over $60,000 in 4 theaters for an average of $15,213. This is an impressive, but well below the opening of An Inconvenient Truth, which averaged more than The 11th Hour made in total. Send a Bullet was second with an estimated $13,000 in one theater. The overall box office leader, Superbad, placed third, averaging $11,212 in just under 3,000 theaters. The King of Kong was the only other film to top $10,000 and the third documentary to reach that milestone this weekend. It earned just over $50,000 in 5 theaters for an average of $10,299. More...

Ultimatum Alone on Top of the Per Theater Chart

August 7th, 2007

The Bourne Ultimatum was the only film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, earning an impressive $18,930, which was close to double its nearest competition. But, while there was only one member of the $10,000 club, a few films came very close, including Becoming Jane with $9,721, which is even more impressive with a theater count of 100. It is also more than enough to guarantee expansion. More...

No End on the Per Theater Chart

July 31st, 2007

Transformation: The Life & Legacy of Werner Erhard surprised on top of the per theater chart with an impressive $25,460 earned in its lone theater. The overall box office leader, The Simpsons Movie, was in second place with $18,877 while This is England was close behind with $18,430. The political documentary, No End in Sight opened very strongly with more than $30,000 in 2 theaters for an average of $15,767. Finally, The Devil Came on Horseback also topped $10,000 with $11,143 over the weekend and $18,336 since Wednesday. More...

Simpsons Rake in the D'oh!

July 30th, 2007

Practically every film in the top five beat expectations, including The Simpsons Movie, which crushed expectations. This helped push the overall box office to $185 million over the weekend and that was roughly 19% higher than the last weekend and a stunning 40% higher than the same weekend last year. With one or two more summer releases that could top $200 million, this has been a very lucrative season and one that helped to put 2007 in the record books. More...

The Writing is on the Wall (or should that be Blackboard?)

July 27th, 2007

One of the most important and anticipated films of modern times opens in theaters this weekend. The Simpsons Movie looks to change how we look at culture and perhaps change the very way we humans interact. OK, probably not, but it should make a boatload of money at the box office this weekend. More...

Joint Partnership for Sunshine on Per Theater Chart

July 24th, 2007

Sunshine opened stronger than expected at the weekend, earning close to $250,000 in 10 theaters for an average of $24,296. This is more than enough to justify expanding over the coming weeks, but a wide release is still not guaranteed. The only other film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart was Partner with $10,073. More...

Phoenix Flies to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

July 17th, 2007

The overall box office leader, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was also the leader on the per theater chart with an impressive $17,995 in over 4,000 theaters. My Best Friend was reasonably close behind with an average of $15,082 in three theaters. Meanwhile, Talk to Me exploded on the scene with more than $400,000 in 33 theaters for an average of $12,182. This should be more than enough to earn some mainstream success. Speaking of mainstream success, Rescue Dawn just missed the $10,000 club this week despite growing from 6 theaters to 38 and maintained an average of $9,555. More...

Dawn to the Rescue of the Per Theater Chart

July 10th, 2007

Rescue Dawn was the top draw on the per theater chart this weekend, earning an average of $18,388 in 6 theaters over the weekend and $27,979 since Wednesday. The overall box office champ, The Transformers, placed a very close second with $17,577. The re-release of Le Doulos grew by 10.51% to $10,346 in its lone theater and made it into the $10,000 club. More...

Introducing Some Dynamite Limited releases

July 4th, 2007

July 4th means the launch of a few limited releases, including some that have a serious shot at mainstream success. Number one of this list is Rescue Dawn, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it wasn't the only film on this week's list that expands over the coming weeks. More...

2007 Preview: July

July 1st, 2007

After a record-breaking start, the summer has slowed down considerably. Granted, it is still hot with a number of big, big blockbusters coming out. In fact, every week in July there's at least one potential $100 million movie. But that's nothing compared to what we saw in May when we have three films open with $100 million. Even worse, outside the four main releases, none of the counter-programming releases look like they will become hits and that will hurt the overall box office. More...

June 17th, 2007

Movie Website Updates for May 20 - May 26, 2007

May 26th, 2007

Another slow week. If this keeps up I'm going to have to rethink my methodology. Not only were there not as many sites as I would like, there were none that really stood out as award-worthy. The best was Stardust - Official Site, but here I will wait for more of the content to be added before I make a final decision. More...
