DVD Releases for February 17, 2009 - Part I

February 17th, 2009

This felt like a slow week to me, but looking at the list there were 15 spotlight reviews, which is a huge amount for one week. There are a large number of DVDs worth checking out, but looking at the top of the list, I think Christopher Titus - Love is Evol is the best DVD coming out this week, and the winner of the DVD Pick of the Week. As has happened pretty much every week this year, there are so many DVDs on this week's list that is had to be split into two. The second part can be found here. More...

DVD Sales - In Love with New Releases

May 20th, 2008

There were more than half a dozen new releases to chart this week, including to top two sellers, although none of them were particularly strong sellers. P.S., I Love You led the way with sales of $11.88 million from 743,000 units while First Sunday placed second with 468,000 units sold and opening week revenue of $7.94 million. More...

DVD Releases for May 6, 2008

May 6th, 2008

A slow week for top-of-the-line releases and there are no first-run, wide releases that look even remotely interesting enough to buy. There are a few limited releases and older releases to fill the gap. It was also a slow week for spotlight reviews, but that gave me a chance to completely catch up to all the screeners that arrived late. ... That is until the next batch of late arrivals show up. As for the best of the best, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Buy from Amazon is high on that list, except technically it was released a couple of weeks ago. Teeth - Buy from Amazon also impressed, but the extras are a little too light. For the DVD Pick of the Week, I'm going with The Passion of Greg the Bunny: Best of the Film Parodies - Volume 2. Weekend Box Office Equal Parts Gold and Fool

February 12th, 2008

Results over the weekend were mixed with the number one film opening above expectations by a small degree, but the top five weaker than predicted. This led to the overall box office coming in at just over $112 million, which is down 12% from last weekend. However, it is virtually tied with the same weekend last year. (It is currently down by less than $200,000, but that could change as some independent films finalize their weekend figures and release the numbers later this week.) If late returns can't make up the difference, 2008's winning streak will be over, but it is still up 15% over 2007, which is a huge margin. More...

International Details - Still Treasured

February 10th, 2008

National Treasure: The Book of Secrets slipped out of the top five, again, earning $6.94 million on 2702 screens in 34 markets for a total of $169.62 million. This includes a first place finish in Germany with $3.42 million on 641 screens for a total of $10.03 million after two there. The film opens in the U.K. this weekend and should have little trouble reaching $200 million before long. More...

Super Bowl Weekend Offers a Number of Surprises

February 5th, 2008

The New York Giants stopped the Patriots from completing a perfect season. However, from where I'm sitting, this isn't the biggest news of the weekend. Multiple records were broken by Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. This helped the overall box office hit $128 million over the weekend, which is down 10% from last weekend, but this is reasonable considering this is a post-holiday weekend and Super Bowl Weekend. More importantly, the overall box office was up 40% from the same weekend in 2007, and 2008 is off to an early 16% lead from last year. More...

2008 Preview: February

February 1st, 2008

2008 got off to a faster than expected start with January helping the year to a 17.5% lead over 2007. It seems unlikely that February will be able to keep up that pace, but there are still enough releases that most avid moviegoers should find something to get excited about. Granted, this is partially due to the combination of the lead year and February 29th landing on a Friday. This means we have five weekends in February this year, something that only happens approximately once every 28 years, which explains the number of films. More...

Hannah Headed for the Top

February 1st, 2008

February starts off with what could be the most unlikely of box office hits in Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. It isn't the only new release this week, but it is looking very likely that it will be the strongest. Granted, a lot of this has to due with Super Bowl Sunday, which siphons off a lot of potential moviegoers, especially the younger male demographic. More...
