DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 31st, 2013

December 29th, 2013

This Tuesday is New Years Eve, so it should come as no surprise that there are almost no new releases worth talking about. In fact, it is arguably weaker than last week, because last week had Insidious Chapter 2, which was a big hit for a September release. This week the biggest, and best, new release is Don Jon, which earned amazing reviews, but failed to make an impact at the box office. There are almost no extras on the DVD, but the Blu-ray has several exclusive extras and it is the Pick of the Week. It's not the only new release that is worth checking out, but it is close to the other new release that is worth checking out. More...

Per Theater Chart: Gimme Got the Loot

March 27th, 2013

Gimme the Loot led the way on the per theater chart with $21,065 in its lone theater. The overall box office leader, The Croods, was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,786. More...

Limited Releases: Shining Like Sapphires

March 22nd, 2013

Do sapphires shine? Regardless of the accuracy of the headline, The Sapphires is leading the limited releases in terms of box office potential. Nearly perfect reviews and good buzz is certainly helping out. However, Gimme the Loot has actually perfect reviews and it might also find a receptive audience in limited release. Starbuck's reviews are not as good, but the Canadian film has already been remade in Hollywood, so clearly someone thinks the story has potential with mainstream audiences. More...

Contest: Duke It Out

March 15th, 2013

It's a relatively busy weekend next week with three wide releases (it appears InAPPropiate Comedy won't be among them). While there are three wide releases, The Croods should earn more than the other two combined. Because it is has such a clear path to first place, it is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for The Croods. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Curandero: Dawn Of The Demon on DVD Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Duke on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2013 Preview: March

March 1st, 2013

February is over, and for the most part, we should be very happy it is done and buried. The biggest hit of the month turned out to be Identity Thief, which will cross $100 million shortly. There were also a couple of impressive midlevel hits, like Warm Bodies and Escape from Planet Earth, but for the most part, it was miss after miss. This is bad news for March, which is not only dealing with a slumping 2013 box office, but will be compared with a strong March of 2012. Last March started with The Lorax, which earned more than $200 million. There's a good chance no March release this year will reach this milestone. Last March was also the month The Hunger Games opened, which earned more than $400 million. There's a chance the top three films opening this month won't earn that much combined. 2013 is going to take a beating in the year-over-year comparison and it is already $100 million behind last year's pace.
