Synopsis

Legendary Rescue Swimmer Ben Randall becomes the sole survivor of a deadly crash at the height of a massive storm. In the wake of the accident, he is sent against his will to teach at "A" School - the elite training program that turns arrogant young recruits into the best and bravest of Rescue Swimmers. Reeling with grief and regret, Ben throws himself into teaching the only way he knows how, turning the entire program upside down with his unconventional, out-of-the-box training methods. But Ben understands exactly what's at stake - he knows that his students will one day have to make tough decisions between who dies and who lives. When he knocks heads with the cocky swimming champ, Jake Fischer, Ben sees someone with what it takes to be the best of the best - if only he can combine his raw talent with the heart and dedication necessary and avoid the mistakes that Ben himself has made. Heading out on his first treacherous mission to the fierce, turbulent waters of Alaska's Bering Sea, Jake will have to put all that he’s learned into action as he discovers just what it means to truly risk everything.

International Details - Charlotte's Sticky Situation

February 18th, 2007

Charlotte's Web's return to the international charts was a successful one as it just missed the top five with $6.37 million on 2192 screens in 40 markets. However, its international tally of $32.57 is still a terrible result given the film's production budget, which has been estimated to be north of $100 million. The film has one strong opening this weekend as it earned second place in the U.K. with $3.69 million on 489 screens. On the other hand, the film flopped in France missing the top ten with $762,000 on 347 screens and that was for the full week. It did little better in South Korea with $872,000 on 150 screens over the weekend and $969,000 in total while scoring $218,000 on 54 screens over the weekend in Belgium and $271,000 in total. Open on Fire on the Home Market

Saw is Seen by Fewer on the Home Market

February 3rd, 2007

It was good news / bad news for Saw III. Good news: Not only was it the best new release it also top the overall rental charts with $7.62 million. Bad news: That was down significantly from Saw II's debut last year. More...

DVD Releases for January 23, 2007

January 23rd, 2007

Business is starting to pick up again for DVD releases. It's still not up to the level of the pre-Christmas boom, or even the yearly average, but at least it's not a desolate wasteland either. There were a couple releases that were contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, but in the end I went with This Film is Not Yet Rated - Buy from Amazon, but since I work in the industry, at least tangentially, my enjoyment of the movie may have been increased somewhat. International Details - Saw Sees Better Days

December 11th, 2006

Saw III slipped another spot to sixth with $4.46 million on 1518 screens in 29 markets for an international total of $54.27 million. Its best opening of the weekend came in South Korea where it placed third with $1.08 million on 144 screens, which is the last major opening for the film this year. More...

International Details - Devil Drops Out of Top Five

November 26th, 2006

Late numbers for the international weekend meant there was a shakeup in the top five with Saw III trading places with The Devil Wears Prada. Saw III took fourth with $6.54 million on 1912 screens in 20 markets for a total of $37.18 million. Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada fell to sixth with $5.87 million on 2452 screens in 23 markets for a total of $172.54 million. It was also the first time in nearly two months that the film didn't place in the top five on the international box office. More...

International Details - Box Office is Far From Dead

November 19th, 2006

Desu Noto 2, a.k.a., Death Note 2: The Last Name held on strong adding $5.12 million on 397 screens in 2 markets for a two week total of $20.85 million. In Japan the film remained in top spot with $4.66 million on 346 screens for a two week total of $19.34 million. More...

International Details - Death has a Noteworthy Start

November 12th, 2006

Desu Noto 2, a.k.a., Death Note 2: The Last Name opened in two market last weekend taking in a total of $7.29 million on 393 screens including finishing first in Japan with $6.50 million on 342 screen over the weekend and $10.33 million in total. In the mean time, the film opened in second place in South Korea with a respectable total of $1.37 million, which includes more than just the weekend, obviously. More...

International Details - Partying on the International Charts

November 5th, 2006

Barnyard: The Original Party Animals saw impressive growth this week up 52% to $4.26 million on 2035 screens in 20 markets for an international total of $16.58 million. The film opened in a handful of markets including placing first in Mexico with $927,000 on 310 screens, but that's a little low for this type of film in that market. Also, it missed the top five in Spain opening in sixth place with $651,000 on 220 screens. The film's biggest market of the weekend was the U.K. where it was down just 27% to $1.41 million on 446 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.66 million after two. More...

International Top Five - Prada Passes Milestone

October 26th, 2006

It was a $100 million weekend for The Devil Wears Prada as its $18.6 million haul lifted its international total to $104 million. The film's only opening of note was Sweden where it topped the charts with $606,000 on 66 screens. Most of the film's box office this weekend came from holdovers like Italy where it was down a tiny 7% to $3.33 million on 420 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.50 million while it held on nearly as strong in Germany down 21% to $3.36 million on 598 million for a two week total of $9.23 million. The film still has openings in South Korea and Japan, although I'm unconvinced the film will be a hit in either country. But the film has already earned twice what it needed to show a profit, so the studio has no reason to complain regardless of what happens from now on. More...

International Details - Germany Dominates the Best of the Rest

October 22nd, 2006

The German soccer film, Deutschland. Ein Sommermarchen, remained in first place in Germany and sixth overall this weekend. It managed this feat by falling just 25% to $5.41 million on 671 screens for a two-week total of $14.67 million. More...

Crime Pays Way Better Than Retail

October 10th, 2006

October officially washed away the stench that is September with the overall box office beating expectations at a total of $110 million. That is just shy of 10% higher than last weekend and 5% higher than the same weekend last year. Almost all of this growth can be attributed to The Departed, helped by its amazing reviews. The question now is whether it will have better legs than last year's number one film? More...

Departed and Chainsaw Face-off in Theatres

October 6th, 2006

The other new releases this weekend are unlikely to win any awards, but with total production budgets just a fraction of The Departed's, they could be more profitable. More...

Season's Day in the Sun

October 3rd, 2006

The weekend box office was a little softer that expected, but not so much so that one needs to worry about a continuing slump. In fact, the overall box office hit $100 million over the weekend and that was slightly higher than last weekend (by slightly, I mean less than 1%). However, that was up a huge 12.1% from the same weekend last year and that is the much more significant number. More...

Movie Website Updates for September 23 - September 29

September 30th, 2006

It's a very, very short list this week with only the movies opening this weekend on the list. The reason for this is simple, I have come down with a rather nasty cold and after four or five days of cold medication have taken their toll. Fortunately, although the quantity is low, the quality is high including this winner of the Weekly Website Award: Open Season - Official Site. More...

Open Wide, Really Wide

September 29th, 2006

This week we have three films opening wide. Not only are they opening wide, but they are all opening at saturation levels (3000 or more theatres). Fortunately, the three films share little in the way of target demographics, but even so, at least one of them is going to be squeezed out by the competition. More...

High quantity on sites this week, but many of them were for new releases, most of which haven't had any updates in a while. Those that did have updates were generally quite small, but one site stood above them all, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny - Official Site, which is easily the winner of the Weekly Website Award. Can Movies Compete with the Real Gridiron Gangs?

September 14th, 2006

September 8th, 2006

After a very busy month, the number of site on this week's list dropped off dramatically. The decline in quantity was accompanied by a decline in quality with no site jumping out as the obvious choice for the Weekly Website Award. The Guardian - Official Site came the closest, but it will have to wait till more features are added for that honor. More...

2006 Preview: September

September 1st, 2006

I've said it before and I'll say it again, September is the worst month of the year for movies. Not only are there usually very few hits released at this time of year, but the average is dragged way down by the large number of movies simply dumped on the market. This year the September dumping ground doesn't look quite as bad as years past. In fact, several low-level hits and maybe even an Oscar contender are opening wide. However, those few bright spots will be buried due to the sheer number of releases -- an average of 3 and a half films are opening wide each week. More...

Martin Scorsese begins his latest campaign to win that elusive Oscar as The Departed looks to take first place over the weekend.
