2014 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Feature-Length Documentary

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we look at Best Feature-Length Documentary, which is probably the hardest category to predict, because some of the previous winners of major awards were not even nominated for an Oscar. DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 4th, 2014

It's another slow week on the home market. There are five or so first run releases, but the biggest box office was earned by Free Birds, which earned $55 million. Fortunately, while there are no box office hits, there are some high quality releases, led by Dallas Buyers Club. Unfortunately, the DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack has so few extras that I'm convinced a special edition is on its way, so it isn't a Pick of the Week contender. The Oscar nominations were announced this morning and there are some surprises mixed in with the predictable results. 2014 Awards Season: DGA: Telling Stories about Documentaries

The Directors Guild of America finished its theatrical nominations yesterday with the Documentary category. I'm of two minds with the list of nominees. On the one hand, I feel like I should be surprised, because a number of documentaries thought to be Oscar favorites were left off the list. Per Theater Chart: IMAX Shines Like the Son

Space Station remained in first place on the per theater chart, again with $30,602. The film has made $2 million so far this year and it seems likely it will last long enough to get to $100 million in total, eventually. You Will Be My Son was next with $15,301 in one theater. Surprisingly Austenland made the $10,000 club. Given its reviews and its genre, earning its per theater average of $10,166 in four theaters is surprisingly high. Blue Jasmine rounded out the $10,000 club with $10,005. It is already playing in 229 theaters and it will expand more. More...

Saintly Limited Releases

There are not a lot of limited release this week and only two of them are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Cutie and the Boxer is earning the best reviews, but it is a documentary, so its potential to expand is limited. Ain't Them Bodies Saints' reviews are not as good, but good enough to suggest it will find an audience in theaters. More...
